  About the Author

  Chapter One

  “Mommy, Mommy!” Kayla cried excitedly.

“Adam Westbrook, what is my baby doing down here? Why is she on your shoulders? Come here, baby.” Samantha Powell scowled.

“She wanted her mommy, so I brought her to you,” Adam said, lifting Kayla off of his shoulders and handing her to Samantha.

“Hey, baby, did you enjoy the race?” Samantha asked, kissing Kayla on the top of her curly head.

  “There’s Tracey,” Adam said.

  “Auntie TeeTee!” Kayla called out.

“I’ll meet up with y’all later. I’m going to get Kayla out of here. Tell Tracey I’ll see her later,” Sam said, leaving the pit with Kayla in her arms. “We’ll see Auntie later, sweetie.”

  “’K, Mommy.”

Samantha needed to get out of the stadium quickly before she ran into Daniel Ashby. She walked briskly over to her car, unlocked the doors and secured Kayla in her car seat and pulled out of the stadium. She was on the highway when she remembered she’d left her bag and cell phone behind.

“Oh heck!” she cried, driving to the nearest exit to turn around and go back to the stadium. At this point it would be futile to call her sister Tracey to bring it out for her—besides, she didn’t have her cell, it was at the stadium with her bag. She’d been in such a hurry she’d forgotten them. She’d just grabbed her keys and rushed out. No, she had to go back. She just hoped you-know-who was gone, too.

Samantha pulled into the parking lot of the stadium, jumped out, opened the back door and took Kayla out of her car seat.

“Auntie TeeTee!” her daughter cried, squirming.

“No, honey, Auntie is gone. Mommy just forgot something. We will only be a minute, and then Mommy will take you home,” Samantha said, rushing to get her out of the car.

  “Hot dog!” Kayla chimed excitedly.

“No hot dogs,” Samantha smiled. “You’ve had enough junk food for one day. Uncle Adam and Uncle Declan have plied you with enough to last you all week. No, a nice, healthy meal is on tap for you.”

“Hot dog! Hot dog!” Kayla chanted.

Samantha smiled down at her daughter then started to walk briskly through the lot to where she’d left her things. She heard her name being called and grimaced. She really didn’t have time for this now.

“Adam, I thought you’d left,” Samantha said, turning with Kayla in her arms, to face him.

“Forget about me. You hightailed it out of here so fast with Princess here, I’m surprised to see you back,” he smiled.

“I forgot my bag and cell,” Samantha sighed.

“Makes one wonder why the rush.” He eyed her, ignoring her excuse.

Samantha knew her brother-in-law, and tact was definitely not one of his strong suits. “Why would you wonder, Adam?” she retorted. The butterflies in her stomach were now having a field day. “Besides, shouldn’t you be somewhere with your brother and my sister, celebrating her win?”

“Yes, ma’am, and so should you. Which again brings me to the questions of why the rush, and why aren’t you joining in on the festivities?” He smiled at her with that wicked grin of his.

“No reason, Adam. Now if you don’t mind, I have to get my bag and go,” she said, and turned to leave.

“Unca Adam!” Kayla cried, reaching for him.

Great, just what she needed—her baby wanting her “Unca Adam,”

“Not now, baby, Mommy has to get her things.”

  “Unca Adam!” Kayla whined.

“You may as well give her to me while you go do what you have to do. That way you can keep running away from you-know-who,” he said pointedly.

“I—I don’t know what you’re taking about,” Samantha stuttered.

“Sure you do, suga’. Give me Princess and go,” he said taking Kayla out of her arms. “He’s still around, you know.”

“Like I said, I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she responded nervously.

“Give me the keys to your car, and me and Princess here will wait for you there. Where are you parked?” Adam asked.

  Samantha handed him her keys.

“Thanks,” she said, pointing in the direction of where she’d parked. Then she turned and rushed off.

“You’re welcome!” she heard him call after her. Samantha really wanted to turn around
and smack that smirk right off of her brother-in-law’s face.

She had to smile. Good ol’ Adam. The philanderer had apparently guessed her secret. “He would,” Samantha chuckled, as she reached the pit, walked over to where she’d left her things, and grabbed them.

“I was wondering if you were coming back for those,” Chuck Masters said. He used to be Shane’s crew chief, now he worked side-by-side with her for Tracey.

Samantha was startled, her hand instantly going to her chest.

“Chuck, you scared me!” “Why are you still here?”

“Was held up by Ashby,” he replied. “Apparently he wants me to talk you into crewing for him.”

“Really?” Samantha frowned. The man knew no ends to his ridiculousness.

“Really, and he was mighty interested in your comings and goings, too.”

  “Why?” she faked indifference.

“You’d know that better than me, missy. I gotta get going. Meeting the guys for some barbeque,” he smiled.

“Have fun,” she whispered. What the hell did Daniel want with her? They’d said all that needed to be said on their last night together. She didn’t want or need to see him. She definitely didn’t want him to see her baby girl. He never would, if she had anything to say about it.

“To hell with Daniel Ashby,” she murmured.

“Really? Why to hell with me, Samantha?” came the sexy drawl from behind her.

Samantha slowly turned to face the one man she’d tried to avoid. Daniel himself, and oh boy he was still as handsome as ever. His thick, dark, fluffy curls hung almost to the nape of his neck.

Those piercing silver-gray irises seemed to look right through her. He was still dressed in his racing gear, and looked downright scrumptious.

  “Daniel,” she said apprehensively.

“You’re looking good, Samantha,” he grinned slightly.

“Good race,” she murmured, for the lack of anything better to say.

“Not good enough, apparently. One day soon though,” he commented snidely.

Samantha wondered what that was about. Daniel’s tone sounded as if he had something against Tracey.

“Perhaps,” she said, testing the waters. “Anyway, I was on my way out. I have things to do. Good luck with your future races.” Samantha went to walk past him, but he grasped her arm.

“We need to talk, Samantha,” he whispered.

“Let go of my arm, Daniel. I don’t see that we have anything to talk about,” she said angrily. How dare he touch her!

“Yes, we do. We left things on a bad note. I need to talk to you,” Daniel said firmly.

“A ‘bad note,’ Daniel? Really? Is that what you call me telling you that I’m pregnant, and you trying to talk me into getting an abortion?” she snorted. “Get a life. Oh, I forgot, you already did.”

“So, is this what the cold shoulder is about? You having an abortion?” he whispered. “Trust me, Samantha, it was for the best.”

  “Best for whom, Daniel?”

“Listen, we can’t talk here. I need to talk to you about something and I can’t do it here,” he said anxiously.

  “No!” she barked.

“Come on, Samantha. I know you still have feelings for me. I can feel your heat. Not to mention the sudden rise and fall of those beautiful breasts that fit so perfectly in my mouth,” he smirked.

“Go take a piss, Daniel. I’m out,” she snapped, jerking free of his grasp and walking off.

“We will see one another again, Samantha; trust me on that,” he called after her.

“Not if I can help it!” she snarled.

“That’s the thing; you won’t be able to help it. You and I both know that,” he sneered.

“As usual, you think very highly of yourself!” she called out, and continued walking. Why was he still talking to her? she thought.

“Why, of course. Is there any reason why I shouldn’t?” she heard him say.

“Yes. You’re not all that you think you are. Trust me. I know,” she shot back. Like she’d forget in all his fineness how much of an asshole he really was.

Samantha walked on shaky legs back to her car. Her heart was beating so fast in her chest she could almost hear each succinct beat.

Adam was waiting outside her car with Kayla in his arms. The two looked to be having a grand time. Adam was doing something to make her daughter giggle uncontrollably. He was probably making funny faces, something he often did with her.

“Come on, baby. It’s time to go home,” she said, her voice quivering, as she reached for Kayla.

“Why don’t I drive you? You don’t seem to be in any condition to drive right now. What happened with Ashby, anyway?” he scowled.

“What are you talking about, Adam? I’m fine. I can drive me and Kayla home.”

“I don’t think so. You’re clearly upset. Now, put Princess in her car seat and let’s go. Unless you feel the need to explain some things to Ashby.”

“Again, what are you talking about, Adam?” she asked, all the while grabbing Kayla up and putting her in the car. She then went to the passenger side of the car and got in.

“I thought so, suga’,” he smiled, and started the car.

“Be quiet, Adam! Just drive,” she said.

  “Driving.”

“Wait a minute. How’d you get to the stadium?” she asked.

  “I drove. Why?”

“You can’t leave your car at the stadium, and I’m not coming back out here to pick it up. Kayla’s had a long day. It’s time for a nap for her.”

“I don’t expect you to. The car will be fine. I’ll get someone to pick it up or I’ll just call a car service to drop me back at the stadium. The car will be fine.”

“If you say so,” she murmured.

“Unca Adam, hot dog!” Kayla chided from the back seat.

“No, Kayla. No hot dog. Mommy told you that already. A snack and naptime is in order for you, my darling.”

  Chapter Two

Adam pulled into Samantha’s driveway and parked. “Here we are,” he said. “Princess is sound asleep.”

“Yes. I knew she was tired when she kept asking for hot dogs.” Samantha smiled and got out of the car.

“Open the door and I’ll bring her inside.”

  “Okay.”

Adam watched the soft sway of her hips in her uniformed jumpsuit as she rushed to the door and opened it. There was no doubt about it; Samantha Powell was one gorgeous woman. What the hell she saw in Ashby was a wonder to him. Of course, she had no idea that he’d had his suspicions about her and Daniel. He was truly surprised that no one else had guessed.

“Adam, what are you doing? Bring her inside!” he heard her shout.

Adam shook himself out of his reverie and released Kayla from her car seat. Her little arms wrapped around his shoulders as best they could while her head lay just between his neck and shoulder. Samantha held the door open and he proceeded to walk through and straight to Kayla’s room to place her in her toddler bed. Samantha was right on his heels.

“You know I’ve done this many times before, right?” Adam chuckled, and almost felt bad when her cheeks blushed. “Why so jumpy, Samantha?”

“I’m not jumpy, Adam. You’re imagining things. Take her shoes off. She’ll only sleep for a little bit; an hour at best,” Samantha said.

“She’s a handful for sure, so inquisitive. I wonder where she got that from,” he teased, squinting at her from beneath his lashes.

  “Are you implying something, Adam?”

“Damn straight,” he shot back, his lips curved into a small smile.

“I will have you know that I was the perfect kid. Never caused my parents any trouble,” she sniffed, turning on her heels and walking towards the door.

“I’ve heard the stories, Samantha. Remember, your sister is married to my brother.” He followed her, all the while watching the soft sway of her scrumptious hips. Oh what fun he could have with that ass. He envisioned the scenarios in
his head. Just the thought of her riding him, as he palmed her two full globes in his hands, made his dick twitch. “Ooh,” he moaned in his gut.

“I’m sorry, did you say something, Adam?” she turned and asked.

“Not really. I was just thinking what a great ass you have, and how it would feel to hold your soft cheeks in my hands again,” he muttered.

“What?” She faltered, stopping in her tracks and causing him to bump into her.

It took all the self-control he possessed not to pull her back against him and grind his member into her plump backside.

“Ahh, I don’t think you helped matters much,” he groaned, wrapping his arms around her waist and pressing her against him. “In fact, you’re making it hard not to appreciate your assets, if you get my drift.”

She removed his arms, pushed off of him, and continued to walk into the kitchen. “Stop playing, Adam,” she stammered, as she walked to the fridge and opened it.

“I wasn’t joking, suga’, as you can very well feel,” he said, walking up behind her and pulling her back against his growing member again. He brushed against her.

“What’s gotten into you? Why are you doing this?” she breathed.

  “Doing what, suga’?” he drawled.

“You know what,” she said as she closed the refrigerator and moved out of his reach.

“Oh, the fact that I want you? Hmm, I thought you knew that already, suga’. After all, we did have that one night together. You remember, don’t you, Samantha? If you don’t, let me refresh your memory. Would you like me to repeat it in detail, suga’?” he asked. He knew he was playing dirty, but he saw how Ashby had affected her and he could only guess that she had strong feelings for that pompous ass.

“You promised never to bring that up again. But then again, you’re a man; why should I believe anything a man has to say!” she stormed.

“Ta ta ta, suga’,” he smirked, waving his index finger in front of her. “You asked me not to say anything, and I believe my exact words were ‘I don’t kiss and tell,’ and I haven’t. This right here is a conversation between us. No one else is here.”
